Suicide Mortality in the United States, 2001-2021
Based on data from the National Vital Statistics System:
- Age-adjusted suicide rate increased from 2001 to 2018, decreased for 2019 and 2020, before increasing again in 2021
- Female suicide rates varied and the observed increase was only significant for females 75 years old and older
- Suicide rates significantly increased between 2020 and 2021 for males aged 15-24, 25-44, 65-74, and 75 and older.
- From 2020 to 2021, suicide rates increased significantly for non-Hispanic Black and non-Hispanic white females
- From 2020 to 2021, suicide rates increased significantly for non-Hispanic American Indian or Alaska Native, Black, and white males.
