Tobacco Product Use Among Adults
Based on data from the 2021 National Health Interview Survey:
- 18.7% use any tobacco product
- 11.5% use cigarettes
- 4.5% use e-cigarettes
- 3.5% use cigars
- 2.1% use smokeless tobacco
- 0.9% use pipes (including hookah)
77.5% reported using combustible products and 18.1% reported using two or more tobacco products.
Prevalence of use is higher among: men; persons aged <65 years; persons of non-Hispanic other races; non-Hispanic White person; residents of rural areas; financially disadvantaged persons; lesbian, gay, or bisexual persons; those who are uninsured or enrolled in Medicaid; adults whose highest level of educational attainment is a GED; those with a disability; and those who had serious psychological distress.
