Emergency Department Visits Involving Mental Health Conditions, Suicide-Related Behaviors, and Drug Overdoses Among Adolescents 2019-2023

Based on data from the National Syndromic Surveillance Program (NSSP): 

  • Decreases in weekly ED visits for mental health conditions, suicide-related behaviors, and drug overdoses were reported among all adolescents in fall 2022 compared to fall 2021
  • Increases were detected from fall 2021 to fall 2022 for  ED visits related to opioid-involved overdoses
  • Mean weekly ED visits among males were stable
  • Mean weekly ED visits in fall 2022 for suicide-related behaviors and mental health conditions were at or lower than the 2019 pre-pandemic baseline
  • Mean weekly ED visits in fall 2022 were higher for drug overdose visits compared to the 2019 pre-pandemic baseline
