State-Level Economic Costs of Opioid Use Disorder and Fatal Opioid Overdose - United States 2017

This report uses estimates of opioid use disorder and fatal overdoses to estimate the economic impacts in states. State-level opioid use disorder estimated case counts were extracted from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health 2-Year Restricted-Use Data Analysis System. Case counts of state-level fatal opioid overdose and population estimates were extracted from CDC’s WONDER database. The total economic costs of the opioid epidemic in the US was estimated to be $1,021 billion.
