Tobacco Product Use Among Adults 2021

Based on data from the 2021 National Health Interview Survey: 

  • 18.7% use any tobacco product
  • 11.5% use cigarettes
  • 4.5% use e-cigarettes
  • 3.5% use cigars
  • 2.1% use smokeless tobacco
  • 0.9% use pipes (including hookah)

77.5% reported using combustible products and 18.1% reported using two or more tobacco products. 

Prevalence of use is higher among: men; persons aged <65 years; persons of non-Hispanic other races; non-Hispanic White person; residents of rural areas; financially disadvantaged persons; lesbian, gay, or bisexual persons; those who are uninsured or enrolled in Medicaid; adults whose highest level of educational attainment is a GED; those with a disability; and those who had serious psychological distress.
